The partnership between Siemens – Astra Călători Arad contributes to the development of the railway industry

The Romanian Railway Industry Association (AIF) acknowledges the efforts made by the big multinational companies that are members of the AIF with a view to developping the local railway industry.

"The agreement signed by Siemens and Astra Vagoane Călători in Arad is just a piece of a bigger picture, meaning that a multinational company such as Siemens, Alstom or Colas seeks to develop local competences and create new jobs in the railway industry", argued Ştefan Roşeanu, Secretary General of the AIF, in an interview for the Railway Insider.

Siemens Romania and Astra Vagoane Călători Arad signed a collaboration agreement on the 27th of January 2010, in order to implement the tram building project. The agreement was signed by Christian Serjannis, regional manager of the Mobility Division of Siemens Romania, by Valer Blidar, president of Astra Group, and by Alexandru Truţă, general manager of Astra Vagoane Călători.

The project envisages the building of 75 trams, mainly for public transportation in Arad, but some of which will end up on the Romanian urban transportation market as well. Siemens will provide the drive system and the bogies, while Astra, under Siemens supervision, will design the car.

The new trams, called Imperio, will look like the Budapest Combino tram, which was also produced by Siemens.
